SGATE Valve Systems & Live Cut-In Installation
K&J Civil delivers the installation of SGATE valve systems for live water infrastructure across Queensland. SGATE valves allow new connections and permanent isolation points to be installed on pressurised water mains without interrupting supply, subject to authority approval.
Our capability covers reticulation networks, trunk mains and large-diameter assets, including SGATE 600 installations in complex live environments.
What Is the SGATE Valve System?
The SGATE valve is a fully integrated gate valve and cutting system designed to be installed directly onto an existing water main. Once installed, the valve remains as a permanent network asset, providing reliable isolation for future works.
Unlike traditional line-stopping methods, the SGATE system is specifically engineered for live installations, reducing risk, water loss and disruption.
How the SGATE Valve Works
Traditional cut-in methods rely on coupon extraction, where a section of pipe wall is removed. In vertical or constrained installations, extracted coupons can become dislodged inside the main, creating operational and asset risks.
The SGATE system eliminates this risk by using a milling-based cutting methodology.
Milling-Based Cutting Method
- Pipe material is removed incrementally via milling
- No large coupon extraction
- Metal shavings are expelled under main pressure
- Minimal pipe wall removal
- Host pipe structural integrity is maintained
This approach provides a controlled, repeatable method for live cut-ins.
SGATE Valve Size Range & Installation Parameters
The table below outlines typical SGATE valve sizes and dimensional parameters commonly encountered during installation. Final selection is subject to pipe material, wall thickness, ovality and authority approval.

SGATE 600 – Large-Diameter Applications
SGATE 600 installations are treated as large-diameter, project-specific works and typically involve:
- Detailed constructability and risk review
- Custom installation methodology
- Enhanced trench support and lifting planning
- Authority-approved staging and safety controls
K&J Civil has experience delivering SGATE 600 installations on trunk mains, where shutdowns are not feasible and network reliability is critical.
Installation Considerations
SGATE valve selection and installation planning considers:
- Host pipe material and wall thickness
- Pipe ovality and tolerance limits
- Live pressure conditions
- Access and excavation constraints
- Authority standards and inspection requirements
Compatible Pipe Materials
SGATE valves can be installed on a wide range of pipe materials commonly found in Australian water networks, including:
- Ductile Iron (DI)
- Cast Iron (CI)
- Asbestos Cement (AC)
- Polyethylene (PE)
- Mild Steel Cement Lined (MSCL)
- uPVC
- mPVC
Final compatibility is confirmed during design review.
